CCFL partnered with Santa Barbara County Drug and Alcohol Programs to host the first annual Take the Lead youth leadership conference for 150 youth from Santa Maria, Guadalupe, Santa Ynez, Goleta, Isla Vista and Santa Barbara. Isis Castaneda , Director of Programs from Academy of Healing Arts started the evening with interactive activities ; Lynne Goodwinn from California Friday Night Live trained youth on Environmental Prevention of Drugs and Alcohol; Marc Brody from Toastmasters provided tools for how to speak in public and our own Patricia Solorio lead youth in a training on Advocacy. After a learning experience and some fun hands-on activities, the youth were treated to popsicles and some dancing. This was a collaborative event with ADP's Prevention providers including the Isla Vista Teen Center, Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Central Coast Future Leaders, Guadalupe Gladiator's, Santa Ynez Youth Action County, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, UCSB Student Health and ADMHS-ADP. Learning leadership skills is helpful in developing resistance in using drugs and alcohol. This was a successful event.
CCFL held it’s 3rd annual Summer Leadership Camp at Cuyama Valley High School on July 19-25, 2014. 40 incoming 9th and 10th graders attended our six-day, residential, conference and learned skills that will help them to become an effective leaders in their school and community. 30 volunteer student staff help create an awareness and pride of their heritage, discover their individual leadership skills, to gain the most they can from the opportunities available to them and to strive for higher goals in their education.
Workshops include, brainstorming, public speaking, assertiveness, advocacy, parliamentary procedures, and self esteem. All workshops are developed and led by volunteer student staff who receive training through our year round enrichment workshops.
Recruitment for our Summer Leadership Camp 2015 will begin in January. Applications are available on our website at ccfutureleaders.org.
CCFL will host a trip to visit San Jose State University and Google on June 25th! Registration slips will be availble at the monthly CCFL meeting THIS Thursday, June 5th at the Minami Center from 6-8. Space is limited to the first 50 registrants so get them in early!
Google Director of Finance, Jesse Haro, will host us at the Google and give us a tour of the campus. We will have lunch on campus and meet several Google employees who will share how and why they decided to pursue a career at Google.
